Homicide Memorial

Because of my connection with the Victim Impact Board, an opportunity was presented to me about 7 years ago to begin volunteering at an annual event called the Homicide Memorial.  It is done the beginning part of December each year.

All families in Montgomery County are invited to come.  The families who have lost a loved one because of homicide are honored.  There is a huge tree that is on stage.  Each homicide victim is announced a few family members are invited to come up and place an ornament on the tree.  That by itself is so heart wrenching.

The first one I ever volunteered at there was a family that was announced and this woman walked up holding this little boy’s hand (he looked about 5).  The person that was helping this family lifted the boy up to put the ornament on the tree.  My heart broke when I found out that it was the little boy’s mom who was killed.  It cut me to the soul.  Very powerful.

I am so honored to volunteer at this event.  It puts life into perspective during the holiday season.  As most of us are in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season there are families that might not even put up a Christmas tree because it causes so much pain.

So as you are going through the holidays I ask you to please be praying for those families that have to go on with their lives after such a tragedy has happened.
