Is It Possible To Heal More

Around the beginninng of December 2018 I got a letter from the VA. I had no idea what it was about. So I began reading it. As I read I learned that the Charleston VA was doing a research study for veterans that suffer from MST (Military Sexual Trauma) PTSD.

I was intrique by what exactly the research was. So I called a few days later and left a message. A woman called me back and informed me that the research was to determine if video conference or in person therapy would be better for MST survivors. I figured I would at least do the intake and see if I qualified.

A few days later I went to my appointment. The researcher asked many questions. I filled out many papers and after about 2 hours she told me that I qualified. I got picked to do the in person. ( I kinda wanted the video conference just to see how it was)

The researcher went on to explain that it is a specific type of therapy ( I thought it would just be a regular type of therapy sessions) The type of therapy we would be doing is called Prolonged Exposure Therapy.https://www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/treatments/prolonged-exposure

She explained as survivors we avoid a lot of the feelings and events of our trauma. With PE Therapy she will help me revisit the MST and really try to expose details about the event.

My initial reactions were ” I have been in therapy for over 11 years how many different techniques are there to try” Is it possible to heal more than I have. I have already tried some many different techniques. Is there more healing I could do. I never want to dismiss something that could help me So I figured it was worth a try.

I just completed my 6th session. This therapy is not for the faint at heart. It basically tears open the wound of healing and just cleans out the things that cause us to stay stuck and remain in a non-healing place.

In the next few weeks I hope to write a weekly post about the therapy that I am in and what I have learned about it. Stay Tuned.
